© Diana Lynn Thompson,
2002. Gesture, 1200 clams.
“In 2002, I created Gesture as a bridge
between nature and culture. Ephemeral,
meticulous installations were created
between the tides on public, well-used
beaches in Vancouver, Victoria and
Saltspring Island. Neighbours and
visitors who walked the beaches saw the
work as it was created (as opposed to
work that could only be experienced
through photographs); this allowed a
personal encounter to take place between
the artist, the work and the viewer. I
spent many hours talking to passers-by
and had many spontaneous volunteers help
me with the work. Another component of
Gesture was gifting – I took photos of
the installations and placed them on
billboards; these were rapidly taken as
souvenirs.”
