Claudia Lorenz

Claudia Lorenz, Compost People, forest-feeding sculpture made with invasive ivy vines.

Claudia Lorenz is an artist who reflects a kind of Taoist response to nature. Complementary opposites create a lively tension when she melds in an assemblage the artifice of a painting with the natural erosion of wood. The action of the elements has revealed patterns akin to our own biological systems. Clay salvaged from an excavation for a new building was transformed through the artist’s imagination and fire to become a gathering of Sustainabowls on the grass, bowls that carry the memory of subterranean depths and the present imprint of human hands. A text describing the project was printed on parchment scrolls and placed inside the bowls that were given to guest speakers at the 2006 Society for Ecological Restoration- BC Chapter.

The Compost People began life as skeletons made from the vines of invasive ivy. The hollow figures in the forest were then filled with loose plant material. These enchanting beings marry the yin/yang of growth and decay.

Claudia Lorenz combines art and science in her workshops on ecological processes and sustainability, site specific installations and gallery art shows to aid in the restoration of injured landscapes.
